ABOUT GRADING OF READING, VOCABULARY, AND COMPOSITION FOR 6TH, 7TH, AND 8TH GRADES:
You will see ONE GRADE from me on your report card for all three of these literacy areas,under the heading "Literature/Language". These are taught during the same class period, and the language arts areas are so interconnected that it is difficult to separate out the grades for the three areas and accurately reflect learning and growth. You will not see English grammar listed as a separate grade, because all middle school teachers will be teaching grammar lessons in the context of writing done in all these classes, to try to achieve better carryover of grammar skills in student writing.
Literature/Language grades will include:
Please keep in mind that daily work is practice done while learning a skill, so does not and should not count as heavily as tests/assessments/formal writing, which are done to show mastery of skills at the end of a unit of study.
8TH GRADE RELIGION GRADES:
You will see ONE GRADE from me on your report card for all three of these literacy areas,under the heading "Literature/Language". - daily work (including notebook entries done in class, daily participation, in-class writing, and homework) = 30%
- assessment projects, reading tests, vocabulary tests = 35%
- formal writing projects, graded on all 6 + 1 Traits, which may include reading assessment projects (and, in 6th and 8th grades, Civic Oration speeches) = 35%
